What an action packed day we had! After a quick breakfast in the morning in our room, we headed down the road to each rent a 125cc Quad for the day to cruise around and explore the island! Our first stop was to drive all the way down to Akrotiri which is on the very most southern part of Santorini. This place is very unique and special as it is a site of an ancient Minoan city which was wiped out and buried by a massive volcanic eruption in 1600BC which covered the whole city in ash and pumice. This has however preserved lots of the city and they have built a large eco friendly building around the excavation site to protect and preserve it. It was incredible to see this ancient city and the remaining buildings, pathways, walls and pots left behind!
After our stop here we headed down to Red Beach on the south coast (with the atv’s of course!) which lies under a steep rising cliff of red rock. Even the beach sand is red and it is a pretty cool sight to see! However, the beach is small and was quite busy so we decided to carry on towards the very southern tip of Santorini to cape Akrotiri. After we took in the beautiful 360 degree panoramic views, we headed to a small Taverna for some lunch of Greek salad and Moussaka! Once lunch was finished, we got back on the ATV’s and we headed down a steep gravel road to Black beach (also on the southern coast) in which we found a beautiful area with nice fine black sand! (I wonder where it gets its name from) We settled here for a while and enjoyed a few refreshing swims in the sea to cool off. It was bloody hot today again and all the black rock and sand around you doesn’t make things any cooler!
After spending an hour and a half or so here, we decided we wanted to drive over to the east coast and check out Perissa Beach. After a 20 minute drive we arrived to find probably one of the nicest beaches we’ve been on all trip so far! The water was calling us again so we set up shop and took another dip in the sea and just relaxed and enjoyed the afternoon here. Perissa is a cool little town with a good vibe to it and its somewhere we would definitely come back to!
It was now half past 5 and time to make our way back to Fira to drop of our ATV’s. Its pretty neat driving on the mains roads with all the other cars and buses and being able to go where you want and whenever you want with them! We definitely got to see lots that we wouldn’t have without them and we were so glad we decided to rent them for the day!!
