Our Global Gallivants
We made arrangements to meet Sensei Linda from the UK at 10 to go for dim sum. On the 5 minute drive over to the hotel to pick her up, we got a call from Sensei Nakamura. Apparently we were having an impromptu get together at his brother in laws bagel restaurant, so we headed there. Afterwards, we had time to kill before training (starting at 3 for Dave and 4 for me), so we headed to downtown Burlington for a walk along the waterfront. It was a beautiful sunny day and resulted in a sunburn on my shoulders and neck. Dave did his thing at 3, then 4-5 was warm up and some basic drills with Sensei Nakamura from Burlington. 5-6 was certain moves and applications from the kata Saifa. Unfortunately, that's my least favourite kata, but also the one that I could use the most help with, so I guess that was good. I had Ann from Burlington as my training partner and she was fun to work with. She's at least 6 feet tall, so a different spin for me. 6-7 was was Sensei Chris Larson from down under Australia. We did different combinations of moves for fighting, like open hand block for a face punch, a middle punch, punching them back, and then blocking their punches, for one set. Then it was variations from there and switching sides. We finished up shortly after 7 and then the Calgary group had 30 minutes to clean up and get back to the Holiday Inn to rendezvous before racing over to Adami for all you can eat sushi. I'm thinking they might have lost money on that deal. From there we headed to the welcome party, again at the Holiday Inn. Lots of schmoozing and visiting with the different countries. It's good that Fernando came, he could translate since he speaks Spanish, French and English. back to our hotel by about 11:15. Dave starts training tomorrow at 9, and me at 10.
