After a slow drive out of Umbrawarra Gorge. We stopped briefly at Pine Creek then headed into Kakadu from the southern end. We thought we would get some info at the Mary Rivet Roadhouse but they had no fuel or info or supplies to speak of :( We then stopped at the NP info centre a couple of k's and still not much info :( Anyway we knew we were going to camp at Gumlom first so drove in there. The road was fine at first but the last ten k or so were very flood damaged and made for very slow going. The campground was very large and spread out but very dry; at least it has hot showers for the end of the day. Again info at the camp was very thin. I gleaned from the visitors book of where we should go for a swim. The sign at the bottom of the waterfall was very disconcerting as they could not confirm or deny if saltwater crocs may or may not be in the pool :{ So based on others comment we hiked the 500m straight up to the pools above the waterfall and were rewarded by several turquoise pristine pools. There was a little gorge and several smaller waterfalls. It was well worth the walk and we spent an hour or so swimming and exploring the area. The main swimming pool was like from one of those resorts where the water appears to continue to the horizon it was just magnificent and hard to imaging there was 70 m drop just below us. The next day I headed off for a walk to the Alligator River from camp. I came to a billabong first with the compulsory crocodile sign then headed further to the river. No crocodiles to be seen so headed upstream for a bit of an explore. I continued for a while until up ahead I saw, staring back at me, a good sized dingo. I decided to turn back and headed back out across the plain to camp. As soon as I turned around the dingo disappeared from site. I had a feeling i was being followed, as I went over a slight rise I stopped behind a stand of trees and waited, sure enough 30 seconds later the dingo trotted over the crest. I made a quick movement and the dingo stopped and checked its walk. I then started heading back to camp a bit more purposefully:) Not sure if he followed further due to the long grass but I soon had other animals of interest up ahead. I spotted a horse to one side of the track and soon spotted a couple if others. All up twelve horses were in the group. As I approached I got a loud snort from the matriarch with a very attentive gaze. I slowly continued and soon got another large warning to keep clear which I did. Anyway interesting morning walk:) also saw buffalo tracks but at least I didn't meet any of them.
The afternoon saw us back up at the top pools. We asked the caretaker- the waterfall is 67m high and the lookout we walked to was 100m. A lovely spot, was just a little smokey due to the seasonal burning off practices.
