Ol n' Ben around the world
Wake up before 10am as it is getting very hot in the tent : weather is very sunny indeed !
Today is resting day. After breakfast, we go for a walk across the moor.
Quickly, we meet a reindeer. It is very big and not afraid by us. We can come very close to it.
We finally reach the old mine.
"The year 1899 is regarded as the beginning of coal mining in Svalbard, when the first shipload of coal from a Nowegian pit on Bohemanflya was sent to Norway" (Bradt Svalbard).
Captain Soren Zachariassen was that very man who first shipped coal from Svalbard. The place is now a ruin, but everything is classified. Nothing can be touched or changed of place. It is pretty moving to be on the first mining plant in Svalbard and to imagine people were working there at the beginning of the XXth century.
In 1900, captain Zachariassen came back to Svalbard and settled in Bohemanneset, this long and flat sandy peninsula. Between June 28th and July 30th of 1900, he built a house which should be large enough to welcome up to 16 people. If that story is true, that cabin, called "Isefjord", would be the oldest norwegian building related to coal extraction in Svalbard. That cabin had to be strong, and it is still in good condition nowadays.
Several other buildings surround the cabin, but they are almost destroyed. Barrels, wood logs, wood boards, and ship wrecks can also be seen in between the cabin and the seashore.
We finally walk back to the campsite. Kayak teams are changed so that V. and C., whose wrist is hurting, can rest a bit. Then, stretching time :-) While stretching, we can see an arctic fox sniffing around our tents. Would it be responsible for the sunglasses I lost the day before on the camp ? ;-)
After dinner, we go for a walk to enjoy the beautiful evening light. While wandering at the foot of a hill, O. finds my sunglasses left on the ground. One arm of the glasses was clearly chewed, and a spectacle lens is scratched. But nothing too serious and I am so happy to find them back !
We go to bed for a long night sleep without guarding the camp :-)
