Ol n' Ben around the world
We wake up at 9:30 and ask the guide if we are leaving today. Indeed strong wind is expected. But Benoit doesn't know yet because the weather forecast website is down. Thus we wait in the tents. At 10:45, the sound of the harmonica tells us, as every morning, that it is time to wake up and have breakfast. The gale, originally forecast at 13:00, shifted at 16:00, and we will take advantage of the rising tide.
We have breakfast, pack our stuff and are ready to leave at 13:15 : new record !
Weather is fine, but the sky gets cloudy. There is nothing much to see on the way today. We have to paddle around Boheman peninsula. When we reach the cape at the exit of the bay, we can nevertheless enjoy a beautiful scenery on the Nansen and Bore glaciers in the sun.
Getting around Boheman peninsula is a long way. We paddle towards Drangen island. The wind rises and waves start to grow. We have lunch break on a beach facing Drangen island. Landing on the shore is quite difficult with the waves :-) We can see Wahlenberg glacier in the distance.
While lunch break, wind reaches force 2-3. When leaving the beach, we have to be fast and precise. Front member zips his spray skirt on the beach, and all the group pushes the kayak until the back member can board. Our kayak is the heaviest thus the first one to leave. As front member, the fist big wave splashes in my face but everything is fine.
When all kayaks are on the water, we paddle farther in the bay. We can see Svea glacier, which is our next step, and Wahlenberg glacier, our destination of the day. The wind is now blowing in our back and pushing us : we are surfing, voluntarily or not ;-) We paddle all together, with a safe distance between us.
We are getting closer to the glacier. It is very impressive. The guide tells us it is surging : it moves forward faster than it melts. In only 2 years, it has progressed a lot. It is very active and is still calving lots of ice in the bay. A current brings the icebergs on the shore, and we are landing on a beach covered with ice ! Completely unbelievable and surreal landscape ! Awesome.
While setting up camp, we discover a bear footprint. It is not fresh, but still, it reminds us we are not alone here :-) It should be noted that a young male was spotted near Svea a few days ago, thus we have to be very careful.
We have dinner facing under amazing "sunset" lights and finally go to bed. Tonight, we have to guard the camp. I will take the 6 to 8 shift and O. from 8 to 10.
