Ol n' Ben around the world
Wake up at 10 am.
The sea is calm and the wind is not too strong. So we pack quickly in order to enjoy those good conditions. Indeed the journey will be long today (more than 30 km expected).
Due to R.'s injury, we change the teams: i'll go with R. and O. will go with V.
When we leave the camp, the sun is shining and the sea is very calm. We are moving quickly ! We make a first stop after 9km to eat cereal bars.
Then we keep paddling along a very large peninsula. After 15km, we reach Cape Thordsen and its vertical cliffs which might create shore breaks. But the wind blows from the south contrary to what was forecast and it is not too strong. So no shore breaks, but a strange kind of swell that we paddle across easily.
We continue our journey heading north to Rundoden where we stop for lunch break. It is 4 pm.
The sea is still calm so we decide to keep going further. We enter now Billefjord. In the distance, we can see Tempelfjord, which is characterized by its temple-like mountain.
On the route, we pass near the Swedish House.
Svenskhuset (the Swedish House) is the oldest house on Spitsbergen. It was erected in 1872 by the Swedes and was intended to withstand the harsh conditions of the Svalbard winters. A group of norwegian seal hunters were stuck on the island in the autumn of 1872. Some of them were rescued directly, but it was agreed that 17 men without families would spend the winter in the house waiting for assistance. Unfortunately, next summer, a Norwegian ship came to rescue the stranded men, but found them dead. The cause of death was long believed to be scurvy, but research done in 2008 has revealed that the men probably suffered lead poisoning. Svenskhuset is today preserved as a cultural heritage site.
After 25km of paddling, the north wind rises as expected, creating strong waves facing us. The last kilometers are quite exhausting, especially in those conditions. But we finally reach our goal : Skansen old gypsum mine.
The first possible campsite is facing north, so we decide to enter the bay in order to reach another campsite protected from the wind.
After setting up the camp, we do a long session of stretching to recover.
Dinner and go to bed without night shift ;-)
