Ol n' Ben around the world
O. wakes up at 6 for his shift from 6 to 8. He wakes me up at 7:45. I will have the last shift of the night, from 8 to 10. O. passes me the gun and I discover that cookies are waiting for me under the tent. That's a good surprise !
O. stays awake. He wants to clean himself, near the pond. The weather is very sunny again ! The view from the pond over the camp and the glacier is beautiful. What a day !
At 9, I get everything ready for breakfast. Do not even ned to go and wake up the guide, he gets out of his tent at 10.
After breakfast, we load the kayaks with food supplies we get the day before in five large plastic containers ! Kayaks are really heavy, especially ours ! We leave towards the cape of Svea bay. Three easy kilometers on flat waters. We make a short stop there, and then leave towards Ekman fjord, our final destination of the day. We paddle around a large and flat peninsula. The sun is shining brightly, and illuminates Svea glacier and the the mountain we climbed yesterday.
But suddenly, wind rises, waves swell, and paddling gets more difficult. F. who paddles alone in the K1 today has a lot of difficulties moving forward and finally gets towed by B. and C. in their K2R. We are facing the waves and paddle at 4 km/h with difficulty. Our guide decides to set the pace and accelerates at 6 km/h so that we get out of this windy zone as quickly as possible. Everybody must follow him. It is pretty rough and exhausting, we get lots of water in the face while waves are crushing at the front of kayaks. Our kayak is heavy, but once launched, it gets quite fast and finds its way breaking the waves. We eventually get out of the windy zone quite fast. We make a stop on the shore to rest a bit, close to a river. We are in the shade of a big mountain and it is quite chilly ! We have lunch there. Finally the sun comes out from behind the mountain and we can enjoy the view over the beautiful organ-like mountain facing us.
We board our kayaks for the last part of the journey towards Ekman fjord. 8 km to go, and we aim at a large and flat island. On the way, we see a lot of barnacle gooses. The sea is much calmer, ans we reach the camp easily. The site is gorgeous, nested close to a waterfall, and facing this amazing organ-like mountain which is closer than ever !
We set up the camp. We will stay two nights here. We have dinner and go rapidly to bed as the temperature is really low tonight !! Nevertheless, we take time to enjoy the beautiful light of the sun playing hide and seek with the mountains...
