So it's back to Switzerland once more to visit the last city we have to see there. We held out on Geneva earlier because we were planning to meet up with Kate Nelson, a fellow colleague from prestigious Butler University, who is currently an Au Pair for a family just outside of Geneva. It turns out that Kate's host family actually lives in France, so we went through a lot of border crossings in and out of Geneva this week. By the way, I've only had my passport checked 3 times in Europe, and two were at airports. If you look at a map, Geneva is actually kind of a peninsula located inside France, so French is spoken there rather than German. However, Kate's host family is German, so they speak German, and thankfully for us English as well. The family was very welcoming to us, so thanks to them for allowing some travel-beat free loaders into their home for a couple days. We actually stayed a day longer than expected because they were so nice. Also, they have an awesome dog that I almost brought with me, it's about a 100lb dog so it's not very small, and I'm going in a little bit of withdrawal from not having a dog to play with over here. As a side note, dogs are accepted almost anywhere in Europe, it's not uncommon to see dogs on trains or inside buildings. Back to the city, Geneva is a lot smaller than I expected, its only about 130,000 people, so we saw most of the city within the first day. The main highlight or landmark is their fountain which is the highest in Europe, 134m. The second day, we went with Kate to see the Red Cross Museum, the Red Cross is based in Switzerland, and the United Nations Building, which also has a headquarters based in Geneva. We took a tour through the United Nations building and saw a lot of the conference rooms you see in movies, with the countries name tags in front of microphones. It was nice to hang out with another American for a couple days, we really haven't seen a whole lot of them backpacking, just Aussies. Kate also showed us a club in Geneva which was fun, but everybody in France smokes and I don't think I've ever smelt so bad in my life the next morning, at one point there were literally a dozen people smoking within about 3 feet of me. This was also about the first time I've been in a car in about a month and a half. So thanks to Kate and the family, hopefully we'll get some pictures up of the family so other people can see them, and on to the next country.
