Noyelles Travels
Had a late start & an excellent continental breakfast
& then walked down to a small Norman church of St Catalda next to a very fancy fountain
surrounded by nude statues. The church
was quite austere in a Romanesque/Norman style & was excellent. From here we went to the huge Palermo cathedral which is an extraordinary mixture of styles externally but is not so impressive internally except in its size.
It was strange to have to decide for ourselves where to go after the Tunisian tour but it was nice to be able to wander at will rather than under orders. Every coin has 2 faces.
Walking in Palermo is an exciting experience as many of the
streets are just narrow lanes & traffic rules seem to be advisory rather than compulsory. Zebra crossings are marked very faintly & we find that crossing is a matter of confidence &
faith rather than rules. As in Jakarta the thing is to appear to be assertive & then the traffic goes around, rather than through you.
After a rest, as it was quite warm & we were tired from the time on the ferry, we walked down towards the port area & visited another church before wandering back looking for somewhere to have dinner. Unfortunately most places only start serving dinner after 7pm & we were too early but luckily we found a small restaurant near to our hotel. The street that the hotel is in has several bike shops at one end & in each one a man was assembling or repairing bikes of all descriptions. We were home by 8pm & whilst d*** slept Jane downloaded the photos from the last few days.
