Wednesday 21st May
Another great day weather wise which we took advantage of. Drove down to Ponte Felcino station & caught a train to Umbertide, about 30k north of here, meeting Caroline on the way. Umbertide is a gem of a town with a fine small castle & some fine piazzas but is not at all well known. It was market day & we found some excellent food stalls with a vast range & some interesting clothing & shoe stalls. d*** bought a new bag for the computer & Peta bought 2 pairs of shoes all at very reasonable prices. After wandering around to look at a couple of fine churches we had lunch in a little restaurant of pasta before returning to the station to catch a train back. Jane & I went on with the train to Sant'Anna station in Perugia which is at one end of the branch line & then took the escalators up into the centre of Perugia & had a coffee in the little cafe we frequented last year. Unfortunately the down series of escalators were out of action so with some trepidation & at a slow pace we descended to the station to catch the single car diesel train back to Ponte Felcino but couldn't find where to validate our tickets. It was only when we left the train that we found that the validating machine was mounted by its doors. Luckily for us the ticket inspector didn’t penalise us. We realised that we had last been in Perugia on 29th May 2013, 1 year ago.
