Day 310, 10 May 2013, Key West - day trip... long drive indeed (6 hours return), but wow! This is indeed the tropics. We found it hilarious that a massive Carnival cruise liner was in port - that will be us in just a weeks time (albeit on a different ship and in the Western Caribbean). We strolled the streets of Key West, enjoyed the azure waters, saw the locals, including some fabulous parrots, in all the colours of the rainbow. The human folks were pretty much a uniform shade of beetroot red! We are quite taken with the frozen daiquiris and margaritas and consider ourselves honour bound to partake wherever there's a deal or a happy hour to be had. As they say in this part of the world - "Lunch is Poured". We have decided to acclimatise to the warm weather by throwing ourselves into it - so we walked the longest main street in the world... Not that it goes on forever in actual length - more so it goes from one side of Key West to the other. Having finally reached the end of Duval Street we reached the southern most point in the continental US of A - only 90 miles to Cuba. (It's actually further, 150 miles, back to Miami!) On a clear night it's possible to see the lights glowing over Havana from this point. We enjoyed the shops immensely and enjoyed checking out actual and replica pieces from the famous wreck of the Atocha - www.webweaverusa.com/treasures.pdf. It ended up being a long but pleasant day and we drove back up the keys for dinner at Key Colony Beach (our new favourite haunt) and then home to collapse quietly - Laundry Day tomorrow we think.
