Day 336, 5 June 2013, San Francisco, California - Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, China Town... All coffee'd up and ready to go after sub-par night at the Herbert Hotel, San Francisco... Hotel in this instance is stretching the bounds of belief - gussied up backpacker hostel would just about cover it. But that is another story and that's why we love Trip Advisor so much. We did the maths on the cable car caper... $6 per ride, $14 per day or $22 per 3 days. We went the three day pass and spent the day happily jumping on and off the quaint wee carriages as they pulled us up and down hills that have to be seen to be believed. San Francisco's public transport is like taking a ride through history - like one of those transport museums that gives rides... except this one has a living breathing city in the middle of it. Enjoyed the fresh air out at Fishermens' Wharf, and really enjoyed roaming the flat parts of China Town - one of the biggest in the world outside of China. Like many things in the world these days... Souvenirs of San Francisco (Made in China). Good spot for cheap lunch though, then it was back into the transit system and onto the F line - the historic streetcars that ply Market Street from the Castro, round Embarcadero and the Wharf . The one we took looked like a tram crossed with an old fashioned airstream trailer/caravan. Too cool for school. Picked up some cheap tickets to a couple of stage shows - including one to keep us amused on Saturday afternoon - post-checkout and pre-airport. Can't believe South America is just around the corner. Did some necessary shopping today. We needed to replace my super-duper theft proof, whiz bang travelling shoulder bag and a travel store had a sale on. Turns out whilst the Pacsafe bags are tough, the zips can't actually withstand 4 times the the volume of the bag being stuffed into it. Who'da thunk it. Fortunately the travel store was having a sale, so I was able to get the newer model of the bag - slightly bigger. Slightly more Hardie-proof and now, with new improved RFID protection. No... nothing to do with unwanted vermin in your handbag... though, come to think of it... RFID protection means that high tech pick pockets can't remotely scan the contents of your purse - the chip on your e-passport, the details on credit cards etc. Pretty techo. However, a bit like all the many and varied vaccinations we had for Africa (and South America) - you'll never ever know if you would have caught Yellow Fever - 'but for' the vaccine. Quiet night in listening to the bells of the cable cars passing up and down Powell Street, just outside.
