Our ferry from Koh Samui was nice & quick, with a smooth transfer straight onto the most rickety old bus I've seen! Me and Billy were knackered so fell asleep almost straight away at the back, thinking we'd be on there for 6 hours or so... only to be woken up 45 minutes later in the middle of nowhere. This is where things went a little strange! There was a tiny stand where we apparently had to check in & get a sticker each, then we were being ferried onto a tuk tuk with 4 others who couldn't speak English, and also didn't have a clue what was going on.
We pulled up outside what looked like just a normal Thai home and were told to wait a couple of hours for our bus, which would collect us here. Like most locals, this woman ran her business within the grounds of her own home, and had a stand outside where she was cooking food. We grabbed some breakfast - I had toast, Billy had fried egg on toast - and it came in those polystyrene containers you would get back home when you've been to the kebab shop after a night out! Weird! Minivans came and went, and half an hour after we'd been told we'd be collected, there was still no sign of anyone.... this is when our tuk tuk driver told us to hop back on and he was going to take us to another bus himself, another rickety bus. So what was the point in going to that woman's home in the first place?! Ha. How Thai people sometimes work I will never know!
6 hours on this old bus went fast though, as we got chatting to 2 English lads behind us, and some Dutch girls aswell, who we grouped together with when we arrived, and grabbed a tuk tuk to take us to Phuket town.... but the driver had no idea what he was doing and we ended up going around in circles for a good 15 minutes! When we realized that Phuket Town wasn't in actual fact where it was all happening, we managed to get ourselves across to Patong at about 11pm - one of the longer days of travelling for sure. Phuket is notorious for it's 'ping pong shows' and if I'm honest, this was the only reason we came here - to kill our curiosity!
For anyone who doesn't know what these are I'll try and be quick with this.... A Thai woman will be up on stage with a skimpy outfit on, and no knickers. She then proceeds to put a ping pong ball up inside herself, before popping it back out of her own accord. It doesn't stop there though, oh no! They then fit whatever else they like up there too.
We checked into a tiny little guesthouse, which was surprisingly empty but actually one of the nicer ones we've stayed at. Unfortunately since our diving I'd been suffering from an ear infection, which had completely swollen up & was causing me some pain, so the following day we explored the town before taking a trip to the clinic. Put it this way, the doctor didn't fill me with too much confidence! There was a blockage of wax and he wanted to operate on me - oh no no no.... I walked over to Boots and got some drops & antibiotics that apparently would do the same job, and decided to see how that went instead.
That night we thought it was about time to brave it and go see one of these shows, but not before we made a night of it and headed to a really awesome bar called Monsoon. Although the drinks were pretty pricey in there, we ended up staying all night and getting happily drunk, dancing and singing along to all our favourite classics from back home played by an incredible local band! Being that little more intoxicated we thought we'd be able to handle what we were about to see that little bit more easily, so we walked on in.... only to be greeted by two older women already stood up on the stage ready to go. At first it was just cringey because some of the things they were using were outrageous, but then when she brought out this tiny little bird and proceeded to pop that up inside ALIVE I almost threw up and we could not watch any more so we walked out! Scarred for life!! Ha, something we definitely won't be doing again.. Luckily this was right at the end of our night so we didn't let it ruin an awesome time. Having seen what we came to see, we left the next day and headed to Koh Phi Phi, which we were excited about as it was home to 'The Beach'!
