We'd originally planned to get the train down through Malaysia to Kuala Lumpur, but with time running out before our flight to Australia in just over a week's time, we opted for a flight instead to make sure we had time to explore properly. Once we'd got off the catamaran in Phuket we had a minivan transfer straight to the airport... where we didn't actually have a flight as of yet! Last minute.com! Luckily Billy was able to get us one, and it wasn't long before we were checking in and boarding. Just like our Vientiane to Hanoi flight, no sooner had we took off were we being told to prepare for landing, it was that quick!
The airport in KL was miles away from the main part of the city so after a 45 minute taxi ride we arrived at our guesthouse at 1.30am... greeted by the tiniest room in history, but still it suited our needs! We were up early(ish) after a well needed sleep, and went to have a look round the main part of the city. It took my breath away! Everywhere you looked there were skyscrapers, and it was just so different to what we were expecting. We'd been told to go up the Sky Bar to see the amazing views, so we located it so we wouldn't get lost later, and found it in amongst a wonderful park. This park was amazing as it had a view of the Pestoral Towers & Sky Bar, a massive wading pool for children, a jogging track that went around the outside, 2 lakes, a park, some awesome fountains and a convention centre that played host to an aquarium & loads of restaurants.
With our new love for all things underwater we decided to spend a few hours in the aquarium, which had loads to see, but the best bit being the huge 60000 sq ft underwater tank that you could walk below! It had 5000 different species of sharks, rays, eels, coral and so many multicolored fish it was so fascinating and we spent ages in there. Afterwards we took a lovely walk through the park, and settled in front of one of the lakes which had some really impressive fountains!
Kuala Lumpur is such a modern place that it actually has a shopping complex that looks just like the Bullring in Birmingham, but 10x bigger & full of shops, a ginormous cinema and tons of places to eat.... including TGI Fridays ha. So of COURSE we went and had some grub there!! That night we walked to the Sky Bar and took the 32 floors up in the lift to see the most stunning views! There was even a swimming pool in amongst the bar, which was pretty damn cool, and lots of seats dotted alongside the window facing towards the lit up Pestoral Towers. There was a waiting list for the best seats but we were lucky enough to finally get one after an hour or so, and it was so worth it.... the view was incredible and I literally couldn't believe I was surrounded by such a beautiful city. I was also pretty gutted we only had 2 days here! Somewhere to definitely come back to. After enjoying a Malibu & coke (or 2) with the view it was kick out time so we strolled back to our guesthouse to get some sleep before another busy day.
With our flight out to Australia in just 3 days time we wanted to get the train from KL through to Singapore with enough time to spare, and to make sure we actually got decent tickets we took the monorail into the city to book them in advance. Although it was a little wobbly we should definitely have one of these back in Bristol! Anyway we enquired at the desk about train times/prices etc, and to our horror we were told that the ONLY train going for the next two days was in 2 hours time.... meaning that we had to make the journey back on the monorail, check out of our guesthouse, grab our bags & get a taxi across the city. Cue panic... There was heaps of traffic at a stand still, but with a driver who knew his shortcuts and manoeuvres, we made it to the train station with 20 minutes to spare. PHEW! The layout of this train station was more like an airport, as instead of waiting on the platform we had to sit in the boarding area and wait to be told we could get on. Finally we boarded & settled down for our 8 hour journey...
