So our train journey went pretty fast... mainly cos we stuffed our faces with endless amounts of (weird) chicken hot dogs (?!) It passed the time though! It was really interesting as we left KL, cos we got to see the flip side of the city. Massive skyscrapers turned into jungle & small metal huts for houses. A lot like what we'd seen throughout the rest of South East Asia! You could definitely see the difference in wealth and where the economy divided.
We arrived into Singapore pretty late and had to go through passport control & immigration as we'd not long passed through the border. We grabbed a cab (which was fairly pricey here!) but our driver was really friendly and recommended lots of things to do while we were here, so we had abit more of an idea the following morning! It was amazing to see how built up this country is - high rise buildings and skyscrapers EVERYWHERE. The population of Singapore is made up of lots of different ethnicities - Chinese being one of the biggest - and as their lunar New Year was in only a couple of days time, the whole place was geared up and decorated ready for the big celebrations. It was nice to experience the culture here. We took the monorail into Chinatown which was heaving, but had a lovely feel to it and everybody was again really friendly!
As it was our last night in Asia, and almost Chinese New Year too, we decided there was no better way than to toast the last 3 months than by having a yummy Chinese. The YUMMIEST sweet & sour chicken balls and egg fried rice we'd ever tasted! Although we had to eat both separately as they weren't brought out together.. ha. Feeling full to the brim, we took a wander (to burn off the calories!!) and found our way to the marina, where the city's skyline of hotels & skyscrapers sat perfectly just behind... it looked so gorgeous all lit up!
Mum had told us that while in Singapore we HAD to go to the very posh Raffles Hotel - home to the famous cocktail, the Singapore Sling. She even said she'd send some money to us as they were this expensive!! Haha. So eventually we found the hotel (which was extremeeeely nice!) & enjoyed just the one cocktail, then got chatting to some of the bar staff who were trying to get us to have another... I wonder why!!
Because we were only here as a stopover for our flight to Australia, we'd only booked one night. It was a shame, cos just like KL there was so much more to see that we just couldn't fit into the time we had! We headed back to pack up our bags and get an early night, but ended up skyping home for a good few hours instead. Oops! With a busy day ahead, we made sure we were on the ball by checking into our flight for later that night, printed our boarding passes off and checked out of the hotel. We noticed the night before that Raffles Hotel had an enormous shopping complex attached to it, so we decided to take the monorail back there & have a leisurely stroll to kill a few hours... not to mention spend some money too!
The time came to head to the airport later that afternoon, which was interesting to say the least.... imagine being on the tube in London at rush hour, then add 14kg rucksacks to your backs and that's pretty much what it looked like here! We just had to laugh in the end, because every 5 seconds we were knocking into every Tom, d*** and Harry! Ha. Luckily we didn't have to endure this for too long, and arrived at the (massive) airport with plenty of time to occupy ourselves with all the quirky gadgets they had on show! We were blown away by one certain piece of technology called The Social Tree, which was a centerpiece in the departure lounge. The lit up tree was in the middle, with lots of smaller touchscreens placed around it. You could then take your photograph and flick it across so that it'd land up on the social tree's screen for everybody else to see, and stay in memory lane for years to come.... we thought this was an awesome idea, and had loads of fun messing around taking pictures!
It was then time to say goodbye to Asia and get on the plane..... not before Billy had said a sad goodbye to his last cigarette (as he was finally quitting this time) almost making us miss our boarding!! Ha. Sitting on the plane waiting for take off gave me some time to reflect on the last 3 months....the BEST 3 months of my life in fact! What we set out to do, and have achieved as a result is incredible & that was a proud moment sat there right then. For the time being though it was time to start the next chapter of our adventure, and we were both excited to see what Australia had in store for us...
