When we pulled into the pier at Koh Phi Phi we didn't think the water could get any clearer than Koh Tao but there were barracudas on the surface & shoals and shoals of multicolored fish everywhere! There were cute little alleyways again full of shops and eateries, and our resort was straight down to the end with a beautiful view of all the limestone karsts. Ideal location but still away from all the noise at night!
We thought we'd check out the nightlife so headed to the other side of the beach and joined the party, where there were incredible fire shows being put on.... even better than Koh Tao! Some of the stuff they were doing was so impressive but at the same time absolutely bonkers. I also made a little friend in the form of Junior the monkey, who I had a cuddle with and then he sat on my head!
With only a few days here we booked onto a half day boat trip to Koh Phi Phi Leh (the other islands here) which is home to Maya Beach... where The Beach was filmed, and a couple of beautiful lagoons. It was a massive money spinner as boats were constantly going in and out with hundreds of people doing the same thing, and only having short stops at each part of the journey - but well worth it all the same. There was about 20 of us on our longtail boat, and the first stop was Monkey Beach. They literally were everywhere, and you had monkeys drinking out of water bottles and coke cans, eating melons and even sitting on the front of some the boats! It was pretty funny to watch but you never knew where to look cos they'd come from nowhere and jump on your head!
We headed over to Koh Phi Phi Leh and stopped in this little cove, where we could jump in and swim for 20 minutes. The water was so blue and crystal clear! We then got to snorkel in another cove further round, and I saw some amazing coloured fish as well as loads of barracuda. The waves were pretty choppy though so we didn't stay out in it for too long. Finally we pulled into Maya Beach which was so beautiful, but unfortunately the sun had gone behind the karsts so the majority of the beach was in the shade! It was lovely to chill out in one of the quieter spots of the beach though, take in our surroundings and watch the world go by, before making our way back to the main island. We even stopped on the way back, in the middle of the ocean and watched an incredible sunset on the horizon. Perfect afternoon!
The next day we got the catamaran back to Phuket.. a little gutted that we weren't able to dive whilst there cos of my ear infection, as there were some incredible dive sites around the island... but happy we'd visited such a lovely part of Thailand.
