April 26th (Sunday) - Day 56 - Margaret River
Had a bit of a lay in and met the bus for our tour outside the front of the park. Good job we were early as they bus was 15 minutes early. The bus driver was a really happy go lucky guy who made us feel welcome straight away. He asked us loads of questions about our trip so we fired off the usual answers. We got to our first winery at 11am. The owner of the winery was in his late 50's and is the dirtiest old man I have ever met. He was comparing young fine wines to women if you know what I mean. We had about 8 samples of wine including some fortified rose chilli wine - I wanted to get some but could not really carry it. Next we went to a larger winery, this one was more of a large scale one compared to the family run one we just went to. Again we had about 8 wines and all before lunch, which of course is enough to make anyone a little tipsy. Most of the 20 or so people in our group were showing signs of being tipsy. Before we knew it we were on our way to the 3rd winery. This was another smaller family run business. They were sheep farmers but the owner went back to school at 50 to learn wine making. His son was serving us and he was rather jolly. As they were sheep farmers everything had a sheep theme including the toilets; Rams and Ewes. The jolly man even offered to check which ones we were if we didn't know by lifting our tails. Some more wines late (as I don't remember how many more) we had some bush tucker lunch. Including Kangaroo. I didn't like it much but then it was under cooked and cold! The leader made us all introduce ourselves round the table and Sarah wimped out by saying "what he said" after me. After lunch we went to a cheese factory and sampled some cheeses. Then onto another winery come spirit maker. We had numerous shots and short cocktails served by a man even more non-PC than the first guy we met. They had things like white chocolate shots! Next we went onto a chocolate shop and there was a massive queue for the freebies. That didn't stop Sarah queuing twice hehe. Finally we went to a brewery. I opted for the beer trial were they bring round 100ml's of all 6 beers. Some were really nice and some others were horrid. Afterward we got dropped at our camp site. Didn't bother with dinner and passed out rather early.
April 27th (Monday) - Day 57 - Margaret River
After a restless night and being bitten by a mossey all over we got up, extended our camp site stay and headed out to the lake cave. We waited a little while for our tour so to pass the time we were playing with all the novelty toys in the gift shop. Once our tour was called we climbed down about 300 steps to meet the guide. He talked us through the history of the cave and how it was discovered etc. We climbed down more stairs to enter the cave. It was about 84 metres long and about 6 high. There were millions of stalactites and a "lake" running through the middle. The most impressive thing was the floating table. This is about 5 tonnes of rock suspended in mid air. The underneath has been worn away while the stalactite on top is so large it is holding it up. We spent 50 minutes in the cave being shown all the different things as well as being treated to a light show. At one point all the lights went out and you could not see a thing.
Later that day we headed for the beach where the Margaret river reached the sea. We had a bit of a walk so messed about in the rocks, caves and sand before reaching the river mouth. The river never actually reached the sea as there was a large sand bank in the way. After walking up the river a short way we went back to the sand bank and stood by the sea. There was a sudden drop from the sand to where the sea was washing up and I don't know how to describe this but your know what I mean if you have done it; you jump right up to the edge of the sand and it slowly gives way under your weight and you slide down the slope. I ended up doing that for a good 20 minutes. We returned to our camp site and cleaned the camper a little bit as we had to give it back the following day.
