Shauns blog: "Today we went Rome and saw a fountain and an Irish pub"
Well we did a little bit more than that actually!
We went to sleep quite late and woke up quite late too and missed breakfast. George (the guy who runs the b&b, I think thats his name!) spotted us on our way out and asked if we wanted some breakfast and told us to follow him (bearing in mind his English is worse than my swalhili!) So we followed him out of the building, down the street, round the corner and into a cafe where he sorted us out with a cappucino and a pastry! We were unsure whether he wanted us to pay so we bought a bottle of water to see if they charged us for it, and they didn't! result!
After george left us we went to the Castel Sant'Angelo on the river Tiber and saw it was closed so we explored the streets of Rome visiting loads of things on the way including the Piazza Nouvano, The Pantheon and The Trevi Fountain. (which was absolutely packed! It was amazing that noone got hit in the head by a coin as people were throwing them into the fountain!)
We stopped for lunch in an Irish pub and Shaun sipped a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale (yes, we are infact in Rome!) and I gulped a pint of Magners, which was gone in minutes and was worth every penny of the €5! :S
After lunch we headed onto the Spanish steps and refilled our water bottles from the water fountain, and walked up the stairs and straight back down again! We walked down to Piazza Popolo and saw another obelisk (Rome is full of them!) and some fantastic views of the city! After another water break (I'm sure we drink our body weight in water daily!) we wondered in the direction of some restaurants and came across some things scattered on a wall. It turned out to be an art exhibition where this guy had collected objects and wrote a little comments about them, such as a line of audioguide headphones and a one a little further away from the rest with a comment "the guy that got left behind"; and a photo of a guy with "double take" then we heard a whistle with the guy in the photo standing behind us against the same background. The guy came over and spoke to us and gave us a card so we can search for him on the internet, he was Fausto Delle Chiaie if you want to!
After that we found a restaurant near the vatican, which was ok but we've learnt its better to go away from the tourist attraction to find a nice restaurant, which is quite hard in Rome because tourist attractions are everywhere! On the way back from tea we stopped at that little bakery and bought another tiramisu each! (theres no way either of us are losing weight on this trip!)
After a trip back to the b&b we headed out back to Castel Sant'Angelo which opened at 8:30pm! We got there for about 10:30pm and got a free tour, although the tour guide's English wasn't the best! We got the gist though! We found out some quite interesting stuff, including that the pope has a secret passageway incase it all kicks off in Rome! So Shaun's now saying he wants to live in a castle!
So after our midnight trip at the castle (castle's are much cooler at night!) we headed back to the b&b, via the bakery! I was being greedy and got a chocolate doughnut and a chocolate crossaint! (both for €1! get in!!!) I only managed to eat the doughnut and I'm writing this as Shaun's playing Angry Birds and I know we have to get up early to get to the Vatican!
So Caio for now peeps!
Love Tasha & Shaun xxx
