We were able to get a 2 hour direct boat from Kho Tao to Kho Phagnan on 15th Feb, in time for the half moon party that night (or so we thought!!).
We arrived on Kho Phangang having not pre booked anywhere to stay and were met by lots of hotel touts on the pier, as seems to be the trend on the islands. Andrew had seen somewhere on the internet called 'Two Rocks Bungalows' near the 'Baan Tai' beach area which looked cheap and so we took a chance and went there in a tuk tuk to see what it was like. Well…what a place! We got the cheapest hut on the place, which happened to be right on the beach, just amazing. It was 6 pounds a night, and we could hear the water lapping outside at night, just amazing. The bathroom had no door or sink and the mattress was like a concrete slab…but hey you can't be too fussy! Scooters here on the island are just 3 pounds to rent per day, so once again we did that! We love having a scooter, you can see so much more and have lots of freedom, we are talking about maybe getting one back at home but the weather might make it not quite so enjoyable back in Wales or Northern Ireland ha!! Unfortunately about half an hour after arriving on the island we saw a sign saying 'Half Moon Party 14 Feb'- yesterday! Oops, we had missed it ha ha!! The travel agent on Kho Tao island had looked it up on his calendar and told us it was on the 15th, but he was obviously wrong ha!
Never mind, we had 2 nights on Kho Phangan and we hadn't been expecting to like it so much but it's a really lovely island. Lovely beaches and very friendly people.
We explored lots on the scooter and had a go at some archery, ha ha, I was awful, Andrew wasn't bad. I managed to bruise my arm from the bow pronging against my arm, doh!
Tomorrow we are setting off a real adventure…to the Thai Burma border! We only have 10 days or so left on our Thai visa and we want a few more days to allow us to finish off seeing the rest of the south islands here in Thailand. We don't want to be rushing it and so if we cross a border and re enter Thailand we will get another 15 days on our visa for free. Our nearest border point is that into Burma or Myanmar…so that's what we will do. We have read up on it a lot and it sounds straight forward (ish!) but it will be a real adventure as Burma is an interesting place! Eek! You can pay big money to an agency and go on a 'visa run' where a bus driver takes you to the border and basically sorts everything for you and you return to Thailand the same day…but that costs money…so we wont do that! We can do it much cheaper ourselves and stay in Burma one night. I'm sure it will all be okay, there are quite a few scams and dodgy things we need to look out for!
