Nat and Nik's Adventures
Fraser Island is definately a highlight of our trip so far. We were picked up at Rainbow Beach, a small little town, and went on our 4 wheel drive coach to the barge. On the crossing, we saw dolphins!!! Nik was so happy!! We then drove along 75 mile beach Lake Wabby. It was quite a long walk through the rainforest and up a huge sand dune, but well worth it. It was a beautiful deep lake with a sand dune on one side and the rainforest on the other. After swimming here, we went on to the Champagne Pools which were large rockpools where you can swim with the best view of the beach, then on to Indian Head, part of an ancient volcanic eruption. Here we did some whale watching and saw lots!!! I have some great film footage of whales breaching! It was amazing to see them. We then went on to the shipwreck of the Maheno which was quite spooky! On the way, we went past 4 dingos!! We were in the coach so it was ok! However, once we were at our lovely Eurong Beach Resort, we were walking to dinner and there was another one very close to us! It was a little scary!! We had a yummy dinner, and a few drinks in the bar where there was a juke box that we took over, and had a lovely night sleep in a proper bed! (Forgot what that was like!!!!!)
Next day, we went to central station in the rainforest where they use to do the logging which was really interesting and we learnt about the history of Fraser Island, we also did a rainforest walk and drank out of the purest creek on the island, which was also where they filmed the BBC programme Living with Dinosaurs. After that, we went on to Lake McKenzie, my favourite, which was a huge Lake with sand so fine you can clean your jewellery in it!!! Which we did! Then it was driving back along the beach to catch the barge home. It was a perfect trip and so much fun. It was also the perfect start to Jeni's adventures wiht us.
