Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
After having the delicious breakfast at the hotel, we walked to the nearby train station to take the train to Florence. It is only about a 2 hour ide and the scenery was gorgeous. Our 1st stop in Florence was the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) and the elegant Giotto Tower. After spending quite a while there and taking lots of pictures, we continued heading down to the Arno River and the famous Ponte Vecchio - a medieval arched river bridge with Roman origins, lined with jewelry & souvenir shops. On the way we passed gorgeous statues including replica of Michelangelo's David. We did not want to spend the time it would take to go see the original. We walked across the bridge and headed to the Boboli Gardens, public gardens laid out in the 15th–16th centuries, with Renaissance statues & ornate fountains. We strolled around the gardens for a while and then stopped for a pizza lunch. After lunch we took a leisurely walk back thru Florence, heading to the train station. On the way back to Venice we shared a cubicle with a couple from the US on their honeymoon. We had a nice conversation and they shared some of their wine with us. We were tired from the day and just got some bread, wine and cheese to have a relaxed dinner in our room.
