Another chilled day in Kampot. When we woke up we got an ice lemon tea and sat by the river reading, i decided to start reading my book yesterday and i had already read half of it! It's about a refugee girl from africa who comes to england and stays with a woman she met on the beach in Nigeria, really enjoying it, very sad book though. As we were given our ice lemon tea, the quiet woman always says "sister" which is funny i think, as i do look like i belong on a hospital ward somewhere with these bandages.
We toyed with the idea of going into town and back to the bakery we visited earlier. We ordered a tuktuk into town and daniel posted some postcards, really i feel like i should have as well, especially to grandma but there's no telling when it will get there. We then walked to the sisters 2 bakery and went all out. Daniel got: two brownies and a banana cake and i got a brownie and carrot cake that looked so moist and inviting. We were going to walk next door to another bakery but couldn't see the cakes on display so after getting our first batch wrapped up, we walked back to the surprise and joy of the kind lady behind the counter. I stocked up on a chocolate fudge pie and another brownie and dan got a cinnamon whirl.
Very VERY greedy we know but sod it i guess.
We got a tuktuk back to bodhi villa for a bite to eat (yes, more food) where we sat by the river. Daniel got a baguette with honey and i opted for vegetable noodle soup which i had been craving for a while. When it came i couldn't have been more disappointed or insulted. It looked promising as the woman placed it on the table and there were plenty of vegetables mounded in the bowl. It was when i inspected the noodles the horror came, instant noodles. How dare they serve instant noodles? They couldn't even be bothered to season the soup, it was the boiling water which was used to cook the noodles in. But of course, they left the aluminium sachet of seasoning and chilli beside the bowl so i could have the pleasure to "season" it myself. This is as outrageous as going to a restaurant back in London and ordering bangers and mash, but replacing the "mash" with the evil substitute for potatoes "smash". That would be a culinary crime. Call me a food snob if you wish, but when in south east Asia paying $2.50 for vegetable noodle soup, one would expect the noodles to be fresh and the soup to be delectable. Needless to say, my meal was ruined.
We went back to Samon's villa and chilled by the river in the restaurant, even though i was still hungry, i had the comfort of knowing we had our body weight in cakes back in the room. I was going to have a pedicure and get my hair braided today but we rescheduled for tomorrow. I love the guy doing it, a tall, chubby, camp boy who's skin is a hell of a lot darker than everyone elses, a boy not shy of the sun who doesn't perceive beauty to be pale.
We ordered kampot pepper chicken and rice for dinner. Kampot pepper is really nice and i hope to buy some to take home. We went back to the room after dinner for a bite from one of the cakes. The brownies are lovely, more spongey, like soft sticky sponge which is yummy. I then went to have a shower. The shower is head a hollowed out coconut with many holes drilled into it and i had to be careful that my bandage didn't get wet. We watched an episode of an idiot abroad and ate the rest of our cakes until we fell asleep.
