We were due to arrive at 8am and we arrived at 8am! Temperature was 23 when arrived and hit 34 during the day. I guess it'll be cooler soon when we sail past the glaciers in a weeks time. We moored right in town and just a couple of hundred yards from the dock was the Hop-On Hop-Off bus. Linda was on a ship's tour, so the rest of us took the HOHO bus. It was over two and a half hours for the full circuit.
Montevideo is a fairly nice place, but I'm amazed by the amount of dog s*** on the pavements. We saw Independence Square, Prado Park and many government buildings. The last part of the ride was along the crowded beaches of the city.
We then went to the port market for lunch. The place was full of stalls and restaurants. I had sausage and chips which was way better than you may think. After that, we went to Independence Square and then a street market.
In the very warm evening, Rob, Barb and I ate onshore. After a bottle of 'medio y medio' which is a mixture of wine and champagne and two bottles of Tannat, a Uruguayan grape I've never heard of, whatever, and a thick steak and cheese to follow, we rolled back to the ship in time for the Syndicate Quiz. Not sure how, but we lost! All in all, apart from the walk to the poxy flea market, a great day.
