We entred Italy after Monaco, so we were a little late looking for a place to stay, but fortune was on our side again and some young men in a coffee shop found us a B&B not too far from where we were in Imperia. The next day we stayed off the tollways as normal, but the traffic was crazy following the coast and progress was way too slow. So near Savona we jumped onto the tollway all the way to Pisa. The road was old, but amazing and after traveling nearly 200Ks on a road that was like playing a video game, we paid 18€ for the tollway and entred Pisa. We had read there was more to Pisa than the tower and the square around it, there isn't. The tower and the area around it are fantastic, but we spent quite a bit of time walking around the city and didn't find anything of interest. We then went to Lucca to stay with a chap we met in Mongolia, we stayed there for three days, serviced the bike and had a look around a wonderful city still with its Roman wall around it. It is still the same, the small places are so much better than the big places. Then it was Rome. I can't start to describe what it is like driving in Italy, but the drivers and traffic are the worst we have come across, so we were glad to be staying a little way out of Rome and catching good public transport in to the city. We spent two days looking around at all the history and architecture, very interesting. The Vatican and Saint Peters Basilica were huge and over the top, as we thought it would be. We then headed south to Napoli/Naples. We had a place to stay in the heart of the city. What a battle it was to get in through the traffic! We had a bit of a look around the afternoon we arrived and were horrified at the rubbish we found in the streets and watched in disbelief as people added to it. The next day wasn't much better as we sought out the tourist attractions and were disappointed to find not only rubbish around them but graffiti that rivaled Madrid on national monuments.

Denise Granger I'm glad you are both okay and still having a great adventure. I'm happy you still can have a laugh or two on the way. Unfortunately for you the rubbish does have away of staying around the beautiful places.
Mum/Marion Very interesting reading Mike ! I hadnet realised you were heading for Rome/Naples, etc. and The Vatican and all associated with that area. Glad you were the one on the bike negotiating the heavy traffic. Big contrast to some of your earlier places. Rubbish ! you do wonder at peoples lack of concern - selfish dis regard. Love you !
Janet McIntyre Yep, the small places do give more space and time. Is that ironic? The rush of humanity in the city is what some seek, where they are comfortable. Is great that you are experiencing both. See you soon. Love, Jan
