We left Naples and had to navigate through an intersection we had dreaded going through and found it surprisingly easy. From there we headed south to Pompeii to look at the ruins. They were incredible, we spent a full afternoon there and could have spent longer. The streets are 2000 years old and there are remains of buildings that are 2500 years old. It must have been quite a place before it was buried. The next day we left in rain, but it helped clear the smoke from the air and for the first time we were able to see some of the magnificent mountains and country side that had been hidden behind a vail of smoke until now. We stopped in a lovely seaside village, Pizzo. It is built on the side of the mountain and goes all the way down to the sea, it has lovely little streets and old buildings. As we were leaving we met a German couple that have been traveling the world for 18 years in a 30 metre yacht. From Pizzo it was a short trip down the coast past some spectacular coastline to the ferry to Sicily. Once on Sicily we headed in a clockwise direction to Catania where we stayed for a couple of days to have a look at some more Roman ruins and Mount Etna. Unfortunately the day we chose to go up Mount Etna the weather came in and it was cold, wet and windy and with snow on the summit there wasn't any guides taking people around. So it became a quite day for us, just sitting in the pub and writing this blog while we wait for the return bus to Catania, we did also meet a lovely Japanese couple that loaned us their jackets so that we were able to look at a near by crater.

Janet McIntyre Excellent! You did get to Pompeii! The people you meet are such a big part of your travelling experience, aren't they? All part of exploring the world.
Laas Hello Julie and Michael, greetings from Bamako,Mali. Nice to see you are having a great time in Europe. We met on a campsite in Granada, before my "leap" to Africa. It has been great experience so far, the landscapes, the people, the off-road riding. Have a great time, and keep the rubber side down. My blog (in dutch): routeafrica.nl
