Switzerland like Austria was always going to be about the scenery, and it was, well, that and rain! We entered Switzerland from Italy and went over our first pass at 2323 metres, Bernina Pass, on our way to St Moritz. Going over this pass we saw amazing glaciers, but were unable to stop for photos and later we found out our memory card in the helmet camera was full, rats! St Moritz was a nice place with snow capped mountains surrounding it and cable cars running up most of them. We woke in the morning to the sound of rain and were told it wasn't about to clear, so we set off anyway. Our plan this day was to cross three well known passes and to get to Fribourg to stay with a friend we had met in Mongolia. Our first pass was Julier Pass at 2284 metres, we then went through an incredible gorge, the road followed part of an old Roman road, the gorge was incredibly deep and narrow, we stopped for photos but it was pouring rain so they didn't work too well. The pass we were heading for was San Bernardino at 2065 metres, it was only a small one, but with the relentless rain it made for a very spectacular ride along the valley and over the pass, there were waterfalls everywhere, water was gushing off the mountains wherever we looked. Glad for our waterproof video and still cameras, we stopped on the pass for some footage. The next pass was Lucomagno Pass, at 1916 metres, but before this we stopped for lunch and a change of clothes for Julie in a small place called Biasca, it had stopped raining at this point! Then it was on to Oberalp Pass at 2044 metres where we had some more lightish rain and then it was into fog as we went over Furka Pass at 2431 metres, then over Grimsel Pass we had some more rain at 2165 metres, but by the time we had come out of the mountains and into the valley the rain had stopped, but now it was starting to get dark and we still had a long way to go. We didn't arrive in Fribourg and David's until around 9, it had been a long, cold, wet and spectacular day and boy we were glad for a nice warm, dry bed! Fribourg is a lovely small city with a lovely old area of medieval origin. We spent a couple of days looking around and with the help of David and his parents we also did a service and repaired the screen on the bike while we were there. When we left Fribourg it was raining, we had decided to stay on the motorway to Zurich because we didn't want to ride in the rain any longer than needed and as it was it took us three hours to get to Rapperswil at the southern end of Lake Zurich. Here in Rapperswil we had arranged to stay with a young man we had met in Montenegro, as it turned out he was a student staying in an apartment with about six other students, it was great and they were a lovely bunch of young people that made us feel very welcome. The next day we caught the train into Zurich and spent a good part of the day looking around the city at all the lovely architecture, small streets and shops. The very clean river flowing through the city is wonderful to see and makes a welcome change to most city rivers. After our fill of Zurich we hopped on a ferry that would take two hours to get us back to Rapperswil along Lake Zurich. Back in Rapperswil we had a look around its wonderful old streets, cathedral and castle, it was a beautiful old town. The next morning was Monday, we were the last to leave the apartment, it was kind of with reluctance as it looked as if it would rain, though the forecast said it should be OK. Our planned route today would take us over more passes starting with Klausen Pass at 1948 metres, that we didn't see because of the fog, then followed by Susten Pass that we thought we wouldn't see, but as we arrived at the top we cleared the fog and saw some amazing glaciers and valleys, from Susten we crossed Grimsel Pass again, but this time it was in fog until we came over the top and it was clear and this time we could see Furka Pass because we were close to it and it was clear of fog, it was brilliant. From this pass we followed a major valley all the way to near the Italian border where we climbed a small pass of only 1526 metres, Forclaz Pass. We had entered Italy to have a look at Europe's highest mountain, Mount Blanc at 4807 metres, and on this day we were lucky, there was no cloud over it and we could see the summit! From Mount Blanc it was back into Switzerland to Geneve where we camped in a campground right on the edge of Lake Geneve, we could even see the famous fountain from where we were. The next day we headed into the city to have a look around. We were very taken by how clean the lake was and how clean and incredibly clear the river was, we could see the swans eating off the bottom, unfortunately the same couldn't be said for some parts of the city. The parks were very nice with lovely green grass and well kept gardens and there was some nice architecture, but it really didn't do as much for us as Zurich, we also found it the most expensive city in Switzerland, this was also reflected in some of the beautiful properties that were around the lake. From Geneve it was on into the rain again and into France, so for the "record", we didn't "end up at the Grand Hotel" and "Frank Zapper and the Mothers" were no where to been seen. And for those that may have found that too cryptic, we had something like six days of rain and went over ten passes, all amazing!

Mum/Marion Oh Boy, you sure have had some wet conditions. And so much travelling too, and through some great places. Glad you had a break and a warm dry bed too. Pity about the memory card being full, um, guess thats why there arent many photos from Switzerland.?
Janet McIntyre Another "wow"! These passes do seem to make for some bike-riding fun and use of riding skills. Great that you caught up with another friend from along the journey.
