MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Arriving in Copenhagen early on Saturday morning gave us a false sense of how busy this city is. Our hotel is located on the Town Hall Square opposite the famous Tivoli Gardens and right next to the Stroget which is the busy shopping area of the city, but being 7am on Saturday morning, it was so quiet. By the time we checked into the Palace Hotel, showered and had breakfast, it was around 9.30 and venturing back into the street it was a far different atmosphere. Copenhagen had started to come to life! Not knowing too much about the city we took a boat tour to see it from the water and get our bearings. On a smaller scale to Amsterdam, Copenhagen has a system of canals and waterways. It was a very pleasant day to be on a boat and the Danish people certainly love their summer. It is apparently ok to partake of liquid refreshments anywhere at anytime. Literally hundreds of people are out sunning themselves and enjoying a beer or glass of wine along the edges of the canals. There is a very relaxed and easy going feel to the city. The second part of getting to know Copenhagen is by an open top bus. This gets us to the parts of the city that are not on the water. Palaces, palaces, palaces, museums, galleries. The Danish Royal family are a big part of this city and their history dating back to the Vikings is interesting and complex. So many hours of daylight, we are ready for bed and it is still light. When I finally turned out the light at 11pm, it was still not dark!
