Last nights hotel was situated at the bottom of a glacier. At least it looks like it's very close. However we went for a walk last night and it certainly didn't get any closer.
From the outside our room looked like a block of prison cells but once inside we had great views?
This is our last full day in Iceland and we are heading through to the Capital Reykjavik but have a few more stops along the way.
How different can 2 days be! Today it's cold drizzly and grey. We stop at Vik which is a sea front village with a dramatic coastline. Unfortunately due to the weather the visibility is not so good but we do get to see the Reynisdrangar cliffs jutting out from the sea and the Dyrhólaey (door hill island) stone arch which is a naturally formed arch 120m high created by volcanic action.
Apparently we pass Mÿrdalsjökull glacier which is the fourth largest glacier and buried under the glacier is the sub glacial central volcano Katla. The last time it erupted was 1918.
There are 2 waterfalls on the itinerary today and they are both quite different. Skógafoss Waterfall stands 60m tall and has a heavy veil of water and walking close to it you get quite wet from the spray. Legend has it that a Viking named Parsi hid his hoarded gold at the base of the Falls. Next is Seljalandsfoss Falls which is again 60m tall but this one is far narrower with a thin cascade and a path that goes behind it. It's raining so we enjoy the view from the car.
We have our lunch provisions so when we find a nice spot we will dine in the car for the last time.
Onto Reykjavik now.
Arrived just after 3pm and checked into our hotel. The plan is to now find somewhere to do our washing. Google points us to the Laundromat cafe. Perfect combination and our timing is perfect to get 3 washing machines and then a dryer straight after. While this is all happening we go for a drink. With the washing done we walk through the city streets. It's a mixture of old and new buildings with a lot of character. Lots of restaurants, bars and cafes and people.
We decide to go back to the laundry cafe for dinner as it seems very popular. Cafe/ restaurant at street level and laundry downstairs. Great concept and good food.
Early start tomorrow as we embark on the third stage of our adventure to Norway.
