We have driven only 30km so far this morning and I am already out of words. We are heading down the east coast today and our first stop is a little town Seydisfjördur at the top of the Fjord of the same name. The town is so pretty with its multicolored houses set against a backdrop of mountains and waterfalls. It's a 19th century village that started as a trading centre for foreign merchants, fishermen and whalers but mostly the Fjord is a rich source of herring. An absolutely jaw dropping beautiful start to our day.
It's all about fjords today. The next village is Reydarfjördur. It's at the base of the steepest Fjord in the east. The East fjords are the oldest areas in Iceland but this village came about when it served as an allied base during WWII when the British and US soldiers guarded Iceland.
To get to the next village we travel 6km through a tunnel. It cuts heaps off distance and time to get to Fáskrúdsfjördur Fjord. This is the centre of the east fjords and the island located in the Fjord is home to a largest puffin cave. Even though Iceland is home to 60% of the worlds Atlantic Puffin population they only come ashore to breed and spend most of their time at sea. It's unlikely we will see puffins.
Our drive now takes us around the spectacular coast line where the mountains reach down into the Norwegian Sea. We drive around and alongside fjords, the mountains have ice caps and waterfalls are many. It's beautiful, rugged and wild. We need to be forever wary of the sheep that graze so close to the road and just as I write this we need to stop to let one cross in front of us.
We stop for lunch at a little place called Breiòdalsvik. We can sit out at a picnic table today as although the wind is freezing, it's not raining.
Our drive continues around this beautiful coastline where the farm houses and large barns are sitting right at the foot of the mountains and so close to the sea. The farmers are bringing the big bales of hay up closer to the barns where we think they must bring the stock in for the winter months. We are taking so many photos but they will not do justice to what we are seeing.
We pass through another short tunnel before arriving at tonight's hotel in Höfn, a lovely location with views of an enormous glacier and the ocean.
