Spectacular Waterfalls, stunning scenery, thermal pools, a geysir and a bit of history. All between Hveragerõi, Geysir, Thingvellir and Borgarfjördur.
On the road by 8am trying to find somewhere to do some laundry but no luck so it's on to start our travel.
First stop Skálholt Historical Site where the first Bishop was ordained when Christianity was made the state religion in 1000AD.
It's a brisk morning but very calm and cloudy.
The Geysir is next in the active Geysir Hot Spring area. There are boiling mud pits, bubbling pools and Strokkur which spouts water 30m into the air every few minutes. It's spectacular to see but we were unaware or didn't think that the water that spurts up has to come down and so it does like a heavy shower of rain!
There is s newly established interpretive centre which is a good place for information and coffee.
Gullfoss Waterfall is in the upper part of the Hvítá river. WOW. In the winter the Falls freeze over completely. It falls in 2 drops one 11m high and the next drops 22m into the 2.5km crevasse below.
There are many vantage points to view the falls and we make the most of everyone.
We call in at the Laugarvatn Fontana Nature Baths for a look. It's built over a hot spring and offers spa type facilities.
From there it's into the Thingvellir National Park. A UNESCO world heritage listed site it has natural, geological and historical significance. There is a great walk to the various points of interest including viewing the Eastern most end of the American tectonic plate and the western most edge of the Eurasian plate.
It's a beautiful drive to Hvalfjördur Fjord and we pass under the fjord via a 6km tunnel to get to the other side.
Our last stop is at the Hraunfossar waterfalls (lava falls) which again takes your breath away.
The water seems to appear from the lava but it is in fact a clear cold spring that surges through the ground. It's amazing to see.
A fantastic day of sightseeing again. Time to recharge to do it all again tomorrow.
