Day 19 - Weipa
Toadys adventures involved a bit of a look around the town.
We headed into the Cultural Centre and read the info boards about the traditional aboriginal peoples of the area and the changes in their life when the missionaries came. There was also some information about the mining of Bauxite in the area which is turned into aluminium.
A bit a a drive around town found a large ship being filled with Bauxite, it was quite unbelievable how big these ships are and the amount of Bauxite that must go on each voyage.
We headed over the longest one lane bridge in the southern hemisphere (you need your headlights on so that people on the other side can see you on the bridge and know to wait for you to get across) and found Red Beach. As the name suggests - it was red! The shore was made up of red stones. Again - no swimming!
We headed back into town and checked out as much of the mine as we could see - which was not much really.
A relaxing afternoon, swimming in the pool, couple of beers and chatting to the "neighbours" and watching the sunset on the beach again.
