Day 22 - Weipa
Time for another McKay Family Adventure - we headed north again to the small community of Mapoon and the beach at Cullen Point. The beach was beautiful with lovely white sand and beautiful blue water (and crocodiles!) so no swimming here. We walked along the beach and saw a track where a turtle had come up the beach to lay her eggs and also an egg (probably from a bird) in the sand.
We stopped at the monument and learnt about the Aboriginal peoples who first inhabited the land and the Dutch explorers who came to find a trade area in the 1600's. A lot of the rivers and places in Cape York are named after those Dutch explorers and their ships.
We headed down a track to see the Wenlock River, it was huge, very wide, but unfortunately the banks were too high for us to fish off.
Here the adventure ended and the misadventure began. We headed into Pennefather River and managed to get completely bogged in the sand. With no-one around to help us out, we began digging. After almost 2 hours we managed to dig the car out - and turn around, no Pennefather River for us.
We headed into Stones Crossing which is also on the Wenlock River, but at a much shallower and smaller part of the river. We fished for around an hour and caught a few small fish, nothing to keep again.
We managed to get back to the tent at Weipa just on dark - supermarket was shut so the kids were quite happy to get out again at the small take away restaurant on the beach at the caravan park.

Andrea 2 hours digging does not sound fun! Enjoy the warm weather it is very cold wet and windy here. Footy was a mud bath yesterday
Sandra Mullane Digging - a much better workout than going to the gym!!! Just not as much fun! Shame you didn't catch any fish to eat though.
Bebsie No fish, no supermarket, just as well there a takeaway handy!
