A two hour bus journey on the Greyhound and we were in Mission Beach. We had had 3 days of nice weather in cairns but on the way down we ran into more rain!! So no beach for us! (Not that you can swim in the sea anyway due to the huge saltwater crocs and the deadly box jellyfish!) We were having our first dorm experience sharing with four other people, luckily we all got on well and two of the people were doing the white water rafting with us the next day. It rained all night and all the next day which was perfect rafting weather, we got picked up from our hostel and taken to Tully, then on a bus up to Tully river in the mountains. The views on the drive were amazing and every now and again there was a gap in the trees and we got peek at the river. We were in group one. Our instructor was a small old bloke with dread locks and no front teeth called Fish. His teeth were knocked out by an oar, which some women had lost control of. He was awesome and had been rafting for 22 years, and he could do anything with the raft. At one point we were surfing on a rapid. Some of the rapids on the river were grade 4 and most people were thrown out of the raft when we went over those ones. As we were going down the river it never stopped raining and as we were going through the gorges there were waterfalls pouring down off the surrounding mountains, also there were lots of huge butterflies cruising round the rafts as we floated down the slow bits. After a burger on the bank we set back off down the river on this section they let us float down a small rapid with just our life jackets on a we did a 4 meter high cliff jump. We did 12 km in total and although we feel a little battered and bruised it is totally the best thing to do on a rainy day. That night we had a BBQ at the hostel and tried Goon for the first time. ( really cheap wine in a box ) We have been told you can blow the bag up after and use it as a pillow. Off to Magnetic Island next.
