It is hard to believe God can take one thing like a mountain and make so many different variations. I keep thinking we are going to see another mountain range and drive up the curvy roads and it won't take long because, after all, how many mountains does a person need to see. But, each time I am surprised. Every mountain range has its own special features.
Glacier is different in that the mountains are really dark. The mountains are covered from bottom to top in dark green fir trees that from a distance make them look black, then what rock does show through is a real dark grey, black. From a distance it is hard to make out much but a large black form, but when you get close there are millions of trees growing in dense forest.
We also learned to be a glacier, the ice must be at least 25 acres large and 100 foot thick. This made the bottom ice actually melt when it is below 32 degrees just from the weight of itself and when the bottom ice melts the piece of ice can move. Thus a glacier. So not just frozen ice on the side of a mountain, has to meet more criteria. In Glacier there used to be hundreds of glaciers, now there is only 25 and only one you can see from the road without taking a pretty good hike. The one we were able to see from the car, Jackson Glacier, is predicted to be gone by 2030 if the rate of global warming continues as it has in the recent past.
The pictures we took from Lake McDonald, (a 25 mile long, by 1 mile wide lake, fed from mountain streams and glacier melt off) are just amazing. The water was so calm and clear. You could see to the bottom a long way out, but then the lake got 475 ft deep and way to dark to see the bottom, so it just reflected the mountains.
There is one road through the center of Glacier National Park called "The road to the Sun" and it is about 40 miles from one side to the other and is the only road in the park. If you want to see any more of the park it has to be on foot.
We are here mid August, and the high for today was 60, of course it was a cloudy day, or at least most of the day. Nights have been great for sleeping since it gets down in the high 30s or mid 40s.
Can't wait to see what God shows me next. Our next stop will be Mt. Ranier in Washington and will take us a couple days of driving to get there. Talk to you then.
