Mary's Travels
Woke up today and got ready with first-day-of-school nerves and met Gina to go to the bakery and then to class... Went to school and found out the class was cancelled... Again! Our next class was also cancelled for the week, so we had one class left for the day at 5pm... We hoped that one was in session. We walked home after stopping by the bank for a bit, and took naps since we got up early for nothing. Then we realized that probably no one was in the kitchen so this would be a good time to do our first cooking... ever. So we went down and pretended to cook, and actually made some good food- I made a steak (with a too much seasoning) and Gina made ravioli. Yum. I was unsatisfied with my meat-only meal so I made some toast with jam, and then came back up to my room for a banana and some bread with nutella. I told you I'm getting fat. I'm honestly not super sure what I did between cooking and the 5pm class, but I guess it was a whole lot of relaxing. Then it was time for class. By this time I'm eager to learn, this whole school-thing has been put off way too long, and I'm tired of being nervous for it. So we go, finally find the class after accidentally mistaking a man's office for a hallway (oops). Turns out it starts at 5:30, so we were there 45 minutes early and the wifi didn't stretch to that part of the building so we just people watched, or at least tried to blend into the walls so the French wouldn't people-watch us. Finally it came time for class in to what turned out to be a very skinny classroom, probably about 15 people per row, 2 rows. But it was nice to not be too far away from the teacher. The class was Medieval history, taught in French of course. The teacher was super nice and understandable, and he repeated things many times to get his points across. Before we got into the actual subject, he took about 15 minutes for us all to fill out a questionnaire about ourselves- where we're from, what we like to do, why history, why this university (it was a class for freshmen), and things like that. Then he had us write little stand-up nametags so he could use our names when he called on us. Super nice guy, wasn't expecting any of this, I was warned that teachers wouldn't take time to get to know you, but this guy was great! He's super passionate about history, and goes kinda all over the place at times and enjoys talking, but he also appreciates student input and opinion. We talked about how the Middle Ages can expand even more than the specified dates, and how only Europe had a Medieval time. Very interesting stuff, I'm definitely going to like this class. He handed us a packet of reading, and thinking it would be manageable for a one-week class, he explained that the packet was our reading for the entire semester... only a few paragraphs per week. SCORE. It turns out that I was sitting next to some other international students from Korea and Brasil, so it was good to know that Gina and I weren't the only ones new... we seemed to be doing a tad better than they were, but I don't want to jinx us.
After our day of many firsts, Gina and I rewarded ourselves with a pizza... yes a whole pizza for the both of us and it was so good, we ate it all. We got the Texas pizza because it had the most meat- hopefully to hold us over for a while so we don't have to cook again soon. Then we walked back home and should go to bed soon haha- we have an 8am tomorrow and it'll be a bit painful, especially since it'll still be very dark at that time. Oh well, as long as the class actually happens I'll be happy, if I'm gonna get up that early the class better happen haha... here's hoping!
