The wind has gone this morning and the temperature rises quickly. We are ready to go quite early but the ride through town is a series of stop-starts because at every zebra crossing one lane is coned off while half the stripes are being painted. On the outskirts of Manfredonia we find a shopping park and stop at the supermarket. It is enormous and takes Ali ages to find things but we're moving again just after 11:00
Today we are driving around the Gargano promontory, the 'spur,' above Italy's heel. The first part is straight but with a few poorly lit tunnels then it gets hilly and wiggly. It's not the hardest we've done and there's sturdy armco barriers on the drop-offs but it's enough to keep focused.
The Gargano is noted for its light, and with full sun today the Adriatic glistens deep blue below. There are some [lady-free] lay bys from where we can look down onto white rocky coves with grottos and caves. Small pink flowers nestle in the verges. Once, eons ago, Gargano and Dalmatia in Croatia were joined and it certainly reminds us of our time in Croatia.
After descending from 600 feet we approach the major town, Vieste, alongside a long long beach. Like yesterday, there are loads of campsites, mostly closed.
Vieste sits on a white rock promontory and, according to Lonely Planet, is like many hilltop towns, full of narrow steep alleys and not wheelchair friendly so we don't try to visit.
We leave Vieste on the P89, much straighter than the first part of the trip but but still climbs and drops. The last 5 miles are very picturesque through olives and woodland dropping towards the other resort town of Peschichi. Just outside town we have to wait briefly for goatherds to round up their animals then we reach Camping Ulivi and check in. The site is huge but not too busy and is set in an olive grove - hence its name. Parking between the 18-20 foot tall trees, it's the first time we've ever noticed olive blossom, but all of these trees are laden with small yellowy-green flowers.
The campsite laundry is put to work by which time we decide it's too late to go to town this afternoon.
There are also reports of thunder and heavy rain in norther Italy on Friday/Saturday so we decide to stay an extra night meaning we can visit Peschichi tomorrow.

Chris We've finally caught up with you! Today we've been girding our loins for a 2am start to Alderney tomorrow. But in between I've been narrating your last few days' worth of blog while the captain has sat back and relaxed a little, dreaming of 27 degreesC !! Winds in our favour and fairly light so wish us luck. What a wonderful time you're having, tho we don't envy you the difficult driving. Keep safe, our dear friends, we'll get together as soon as we are all back in Blighty. Big hugs and all our love xxxx C&M
