As we've moved east daybreak gets earlier and it's light well before 06:00. Today is patchy cloud and quite muggy. We're ready to leave around 10:00, the owner wishes us a good journey and asks us to review his site on the internet. He's working hard on improvements and says he hopes in two years it will be as he wants it. We certainly leave in a better frame of mind than we arrived.
A few miles out through the busy town of Battipaglia and we're on the motorway, with very little traffic.
The A3 climbs and climbs as it goes inland, at times requiring a downshift to pull up the slopes. As we climb the temperature drops from 19 to 8. There are viaducts and tunnels, mountains and valleys, little salmon coloured towns clinging to the terrain and snow on a few peaks, especially Mt Vernita. With the different colours of stone, grass, tree and blossom it's all really pretty and really impressive. Through the Pollino national park the satnav shows us at over 3700 feet [1130 metres] while peaks around us reach another 600m.
There are a few light showers and some clouds tumbling over the mountain tops all adding to its drama.
After 90 miles of the A3 we take the sliproad and long steep descent into the valley where we see the town we're heading for. Morano Colabro looks like a giant sand castle, buildings apperently sitting one on top of the other. A short drive through the lower town brings us up to the camperstop with parking beside a row of young lime trees. When we turn the engine off it's absolutely silent, there isn't a soul about, no traffic, no birds, nothing. The first sound is a peal of church bells mid afternoon.
Our first views of the old town and the zigzag nature of the streetmap suggests it won't suit a wheelchair so Ali goes for a walk to investigate. She doesn't make it more than half way up the narrow cobbles, staircases and alleyways before deciding the only way to the top is Sherpas or knee replacement.
The dome of the 1000 year old church is coloured tiles, there is a castle and some shops but all closed for Easter.
Later in the afternoon thunder rumbles around for an hour or s then there is a heavy rain shower before all becomes peaceful again.
We try to follow the Bahrain grand prix on the radio but it's all a bit manic and the Italian commentators do nothing to hide their excitement when Vettel's Ferarri wins.
