There was no thunder or rain, but it's still muggy this morning.
Our next planned visit is Enna, but rather than get there on Saturday afternoon we decide to go part way and go early on Sunday. Plus, we've paid for our last three nights and are due a free one.
Leaving Dune we skirt around Agrigento past the temples and start climbing inland, where there are fruit plantations and rolling moorland.
Around halfway there is a long section of roadworks with temporary roundabouts and barriers. As we approach one roundabout a white van coming towards us skids across the roundabout, down into a ditch and thuds the barrier, throwing earth all over the road. The driver looks OK and a couple motorists stop to assist, but the van's bumper and the front wheel have been ripped off.
We arrive at Caltanissetta, nearly 2000ft up and regarded as the geometrical centre of Sicily and call into the 'Penny' Supermarket for a good load of shopping then find the free parking near the bus station.
After lunch Ali wanders into town. Caltanissetta derives its name from the Saracen meaning - 'castle of women'. Latterly a mining town it is fairly unremarkable. There are a couple of weddings in progress, fine clothing and high heels, and a vegetable market where Ali buys a few things that the supermarket didn't have; local asparagus 50c a bunch and a large melon. For some reason the stallholder can't make up the right change and offers a bunch of radishes in lieu of the 20c difference.
There are three other, local, vans parked here with owners bringing bedding and food by car. Then variously the vans go, their cars claim their spaces, they come back, cars go and so on a few times.
Early evening a fourth turns up. For an hour they all chat and their kids play and then they all go off in convoy. Suddenly it all becomes peaceful.
Pork chops and asparagus for dinner.
No CD of the day recently for two reasons; shorter journeys so less time; secondly, Snoopy fell off the dashboard and damaged his speaker so rather than have directions in the 'drowning dalek' mode we have to link him through the radio.
