Still grey and windy but the sky is clearer and no rain.
We service the van and drive along the coast road to Messina, which is either views over beaches and sea or through the coastal towns. Some of the roads have grafittied names of the Riders from the recent tour written on them. There is also lots of smooth new tarmac here for the once a year cyclists while other, much worse, roads go unrepaired.
Messina is very busy but we get a view of some of its older and grander buildings. Also our last views of numerous vegetable sellers lining the roads. How they all do a trade is a mystery but we will certaibly miss the fresh produce they have to offer. When we reach the ferry terminal the last cars are boarding except for four stopped ahead of us so we have to wait about 25 minutes for the next but there is none of the fuss and chaos of our ferry trip to get to Sicily.
Twenty minutes later we are driving down the ramp onto the mainland, through Villa San Giovanni and up the hill to the motorway. The haze means we don't get any good last views of the island.
Six miles off the motorway we arrive at the same camperstop we used on our way down, but instead off being full there is only one other van parked here.
After a late lunch we wander along the seafront in hot sunshine. It's still out of season with not many people about except locals under raffia shelters and a few on the beach.
We stop for a beer in a bar then return to the van for supper.
Sicily has been a wonderful experience and although there would be plenty to do on a future trip we don't feel we left anything undone in our 888 miles around the island.
