In this part of the world you find yourself following t way of the nut as you journey through the different river valleys. Nut (read walnuts mostly) and duck liver (subtle, soft foie gras) farms line the country roads. The local tourist office actually calls this the "Way of the Nut" which we figured suited us perfectly!
Kick back weeks are a good time for reflection... and if the shoe fits! Well?!
Climbing over turnstiles (that was in Paris and it really was legal), trying to follow PG's directions over water and across open farmer's fields (we didn't actually go there), making faces at statues and making fools of ourselves speaking French... all that pales compared to the day we decided to save ,50E by making a 2 for 1 pee stop. Now you have to understand that public toilets in France are unisex. I often have to walk past the urinals to get to a stall with a door. As travellers on a pension we decided we could both easily fit in the stal... and with only one flush there is no guilt involved!!
\Thats right up there with sitting in the McDonald's parking lot to get free wifi rather than buy a coffee.
Compared to a lot of our trips this one has been pretty tame. We haven't found ourselves chased by robbers in the dark, havenn't had to jump start a bus, haven't been stranded in the countryside while we wait for a bus to be fixed and no having to brush our teeth while holding an umbrella as the roof leaks in a monsoon. It's just so tame and grown up over here.
With a GPS (and his new sexy voice), a computer, a digital camera and good coffee what more could we ask for? Even the weather has changed for the better.
Today we followed PG west along the Dordogne and then north along the Vezere River to Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil where we discovered more cliff housing. The cave dwellings of the past and present were an interesting contrast to the chateaus, churches and villas along the river.
It was a good day to relax, dip our toes in the river, stop and smell the roses, explore a little more of Sarlat (when there isn't a big market on) and wander home the back way.
Ahhh.... the way of the nut is most relaxing!
