Hung around Lions Den pub for a while before packing up camp and headed to Cooktown for last minute stock up of fuel and groceries before heading to 'Elim' to "Eddie's camp".
We got to Cooktown around 10:30am and we couldnt believe how windy it was. Headed to supermarket and did a last shop, then filled the Nissan. We went up to the lookout and scaled the steep hill. It was a very steep climb but we all made it to the top. Got out of the car and nearly got blown away, so windy!!! The view was spectacular! 360o of beauty. One side was ocean and the other was the town and the bay with all the yachts. Decided to have lunch at the lookout, funny!!! Put the loaf of bread and jar of peanut butter on the table and they started moving from the wind. Took alot of effort to make those sanga's l tell you!
After lunch we made our way off rode to 'Elim' to "Eddie's" camping ground. We went thru Hopevale then drove to 'colored sands' were "Eddie's" campground was situated. Marty and l didn't know much about this place but Kerry, Dale and Mick knew it from watching these caravan blokes, the Gal brothers. So we had no expectation and then we drove in to find thus tropical oasis in the middle if the bush. It's calked 'colored sands' because of the sandy hills surrounding the area have all these different colored sands from white, red, yellow, etc. "Eddie's" campground is owned by an 85 year old aboriginal man whose name is Eddie of course. It's basic with bush toilets and cold showers and the beach frontage is open for camping wherever you want. He's told us that he hasn't seen a croc at this beachfront for a little while and the last orb he saw he s*** with his 303 shotgun and it wad do big he had to use his chainsaw to cut it up to move!!!!! There are two permanent crocs on either side of our camps about 100-200m away, one apparently 24 foot long!! Anyway, needless to sayrhere is no swimming and we are on the lookout always for a croc!
After we set up camp we took a drive up to colored sands tip cause we heard there was some crocs sunbaking. Dale, Mick and Kerry saw one going into the water, but we missed it. We did see these awesome kite surfers, about 6 if them doing their tricks. It looked awesome but don't know how they do it knowing their in croc water! After watching them for a while we drove to the other side of our campsite onto the beach where Mick proceeded to get bogged in the sand. Marty rescued him with his winch then we headed back to camp.
Some other people we meet in Daintree village were there which was cool to talk to them again. We also met another coule from Margaret River who are on the end if their 12 month tour if oz, Julia and Andy, and their teo kids Emily and James. There really nice and will be good to have a chat to pick up some tips and places not to miss.
We finished the day with a camp fire and some peach crumble made by Dale in the camp oven which was delicious. Can't wait to see what we can get up to tomorrow!!! Hopefully no crocs will visit us tonight!
