Day 16. Fancy Gap, Virginia.
Continued down the Blue Ridge Mountains today, approximately 80 miles to Galax. Decided to stick to the back roads for the first 40 miles to Floyd - a small little town full of art and craft shops.
Then re-joined the Blue Ridge Parkway (with a 35 / 45mph limit) for the final section. Unfortunately there are lots of roadworks along the route at the moment, and we hit several places where the carriageway was narrowed to one lane at a time. Rather than waiting for a green light to indicate it's safe to go we had to wait for a vehicle to come and escort us through the affected section. This seemed to take an age.
We're now staying at Fancy Gap Cabins, just outside Galax - the centre for bluegrass mountain music - although we still don't know what this sounds like! Internet connection here isn't good so it's hard to find out.
The cabins are fairly empty, apart from one other motorcyclist from Australia - we thought we'd come a long way. He's heading down to South America, so has a long trip ahead of him. Had a good chat after dinner, next to our campfire, and shared travel stories. Heard all about his motorcycle trip from London to Vladivostok, via the 'stans' and Mongolia.
We've seen lots of motorcyclists over the last few days - mainly Harleys. We've also spoken to lots of really friendly people. Everyone's amazed that we've shipped our bikes over and wants to know where we're heading. We've got a growing list of places we must go to!!
