Spent the day being a tourist visiting all the waterfalls in Litchfield. Pretty waterfalls that fall into pools that you can swim in. One pool was closed as they hadn't got round to fishing the crocs out after the wet season, the other ones were a bit of a challenge due to the sheer number of people. Despite this I did enjoy swimming under the falls and checking out the golden orb spiders. Liz did not go in - happy to read the extensive does and donts that Australia seems to have everywhere nowadays.
Driving down we noticed quite a few no alcohol and pornography signs. Apparently (after checking with an Aussie around the pool) you are not allowed to carry alcohol in your car (opened or not) into these areas. This is related to the Aboriginal peoples problem with alcohol. Dont have a clue about pornography don'ts.
Why Adelaide River as a stop? Firstly it has a pub within a stones throw of the campsite. Secondly, it features the buffalo in Crocodile Dundee stuffed next to the bar - but more importantly I think it might be a bit of real Australia.
My charge up the phone view has gone down hill (see blog picture). I am sitting next to a sign indicating not to dump your s*** here (literally), a bin and a washing machine. If only my solar charger was still working. I am getting a lot of queries about toilets sitting here however.
Liz has just found my hiding spot - this will mean pub time. Sure enough it did mean that. The pub was the typical Aussie type that I remembered with fitted stainless steel refrigeration doors that contained everything (even the glasses and beer pumps). Various items of interest cluttered the walls and ceilings including the inevitable croc skull.
The pub is right on the Steward Highway - the trans Australian route linking North and South Australia. This makes it a magnet for long distance road train drivers and bikers. The road trains are three times the length of the UK HGV,s (53 meters). The locals however are just as colourful with strong characters (as we were to find out).
We sat in the pub, asking about the Crocodile Dundee connections whilst also listening to a group of truck drivers with the characteristic short shorts and bother boots.
Before long we got chatting with a group of Brits and Aussies and ended up at the workers quarters having some drinks and sereal conversations about camels.
