Headed off early to get to Galveston and check out the area to find a suitable hotel. Leaving Dallas was interesting, using the Satnav we hit the huge interchange and all the ramps have changed, it took us 3 attempts with going around the block to get in the right track. The I45 is a dual carriageway freeway similar to the Hume Hwy and speed limit is 75mph most of the way, most were doing between 85 - 100mph. Texas is full of really big SUVs, massive Dodge Rams and Ford F250s. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mere pup compared to these beasts. The trip to Houston was about as boring as Canberra to Sydney. There was some interesting lightening which didn't seem to ground but curled back into the clouds. Then about 30k out of Houston it all changed. Bloody traffic jam again, this jam continued to about 40k the other side heading towards Galveston. Was a crawl for about 2 hours again. As soon as the traffic sped up the bloody heavy rain came. We finally got to Galveston looking around for accommodation but no such luck. Four points by Sheraton wanted $350 US for a room for the night. All other hotels were the same. I reckon Galveston is to Houston and Dallas what the Gold Coast is to Brisbane or Sydney. If Dallas is the home of the massive SUV, Galveston is the home of the Jeep Wrangler with no doors or roof and massive speakers full of young trendies. As our main aim here is to visit NASA Houston we headed back up the Hwy for 20k and booked into Hilton near NASA Houston for a very reasonable price. The added bonus is the Ms Texas Beauty Pageant line up at the same hotel.
