Bamburg is located on entrance of Main-Danube canal and is so beautiful it was designated the world heritage sight in 1983. We loved Bamburg! It had a lot of water running through old buildings....and we all got a free beer...but it was a smokey beer - rauchbier -and tasted horrible so I went shopping and Fred drank the beer! We had a lecture about the European Union in the lounge in the afternoon.....very interesting....found out that checklavaskia joined today!...

Today we leave the Danube and enter the Main Danube Canal linking the North Sea to the Black Sea. So far we have been going up the locks, but today we reach the highest point in the trip...406 metres above North Sea level....then we start going down the locks....47 more locks to go....first lock we go down 24.7 metres! The canal was built 3 times...first time too hard and abandoned......second time it was very narrow and got buried with mud the first sign of heav...

This morning was pretty cruise...just sailing down the Danube and admiring the Bavarian coast. I went to gym in morning as well. Today the ship sails from Linz to Passau. We had option of a bus ride to Salzburg or to Cesky Krumlov. Both were 2 hour bus rides each way and it was a nice day so we decided to stay on board and sit on the sun deck watching the views of lovely little towns as we sailed on down the river. Had a walking tour of Durnstein....one of Austria's smallest towns (less than 1000 people). Was a real cute town with lots of little shops through narrow cobbled streets. Was on a hill and shops wound around to the top. We looked inside the courtyard of one house and it was really cute.
