Lynda and Fred Travels
Today the ship sails from Linz to Passau. We had option of a bus ride to Salzburg or to Cesky Krumlov. Both were 2 hour bus rides each way and it was a nice day so we decided to stay on board and sit on the sun deck watching the views of lovely little towns as we sailed on down the river. So glad we did this as we had a brilliant day and scenery was superb! Went to gym today as well as walking the path on the top deck. When we got to Passau in the afternoon we did a walking tour of the city. Sounds of Austria music in lounge tonight. Today was learning about locks...we pass through 68 locks on our way from Budapest to Amsterdam....from Budapest to the Great Divide we go uphill and at the divide we go downhill in the locks. Some of the locks are 18 meters high. Some open out, some sink down and some go up. Very interesting. Due to flooding which makes the danube river so high the sun canopy had to be lowered to go under the bridges....even the captains wheelhouse had to be lowered. We also learned about licence plates on a car denotes how big the city is....eg Linz is a town with less than 150,000 so it would have 3 letters on it....LIN.....towns between 150K and 500K have 2 letters...eg: Bamburg which has BA...then the bigger cities such as Berlin would only have 1 letter - B.....obviously all followed by numbers. They had a strudel demonstration today...they showed us how to make it twice then asked for a volunteer to make one. Of course I volunteered...really neat.....huge rolling pin, then you put both hands under dough and stretch to 2 or 3 times its size.....then pit in filling and then use tablecloth to roll up. Then we tasted them....yummy!
