Lynda and Fred Travels
Well got up lazily, had breakfast and off to climb 10,000 feet to the crator on top of Maui. What an adventure! My tom tom would not recognise the park so we put in a little town...Olinda...half way up the crator....great idea cause it gave us a town called Makawao to go thru and get petrol...well the gps sent us a back road to Olinda and we did not believe it so turned around and went main way.... The climb to the summit holds the worlds record for reaching the highest elevation in the shortest distance..38 miles...so you can imagine the journey...with no side rails either side! Mt haleakala's expanse is 7 miles long, 2 miles wide and 21 miles around! A vast eroded valley of volcanic rock formed 1 million years ago. Eruptions as recent as 800 years ago created very visible lava flows and cinder cones that rise up to 1,000 feet above the ground. At 7,000 feet we passed thru heavy cloud but at the top the cloud disappeared to show the stunning crater. It was freezing up top and so hot when we got home! On the way home we stopped at Makawao again for coffee and a look at shops...apparently this tiny town is acclaimed as the 4th best artistic centre in usa.....looked similar to Malaney....some stunning art! Wish we were rich! Loved wandering through town. Then back to time share for a break before dinner...and me for a swim. We went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner just behind our time share..walking distance...was excellent...both had fajitas...and Fred loved the Margarita
