Date: 25th July 2011
Place: Fraser Island
Weather: Sunny and not as windy so no where near as cold
We were woken up so early today and I really couldn't function. I was planning on just eating the cold breakfast because I didn't want to have to do loads of effort with setting up the cooker but by the time I got there the guys had got the cooker out and were frying eggs.
After eating we packed up and went for a drive. We came to a spot where the sand was really really thick and scrambled up so it was so hard to drive in. The car in front of us stopped so we ended up getting stuck and all had to get out to dig around the wheels and reverse it out. Eventually all of the cars got freed and we carried on down to our first stop.
Champagne Pools. Since we weren't allowed to go in the sea this was a nice little spot for a dip. It was a little section on the beach where the water from the tide got stuck so there was a little pool which was really nice. It was an awesome beach and we all chilled there for an hour or so.
Once we got back to the cars we head back through the thick sand and got bounced around everywhere again. We stopped at a place called Indian Head where apparently they used to chuck black people off the cliff. It was a bit of a trek to the top but when we got there we could see loads of the sea and two really nice beaches.
Since it was whale season we were meant to be able to spot loads of whales from that point. And there was meant to be sharks and rays and maybe dolphins. All I saw was a dot really far in the distance that we guessed was a whale and then a small mantaray at the bottom of the cliff. I was pretty disappointed since I had been looking in the sea constantly to try to spot a shark.
When we got to the bottom of the hill the leaders were having walking hand stand races. We then all drove back to camp and had lunch. The stop in the afternoon was Eli Creek. It was really really cold again but this time it only came up to our knees. We walked along the boardwalk to the end and then walked back down through the creek. That all seemed a bit pointless which we laughed at but it was still good. For the rest of the hour there everyone sunbathed and we played a few card games.
On the way back to camp we stopped at a ship wreck which was apparently used as a first class passenger vessel, then a hospital ship in WW2 and then back to a passenger vessel before being bought by the Japanese to use as scrap to bomb pearl harbour. It then crashed on the island and was used as bombing practise by the Aussies for a little while.
Just after we got back to camp the leaders said we could all go up to the sand dunes to watch the sun set. It was too late for us all to walk so they started taking us in shifts in the cars. It was such a trek to the top of the sand dune though; I seriously thought I was going to give up half way up. When we got to the top there were two girls up on the hill opposite being stupid and balancing on a really unstable branch that started wobbling loads. I was so relieved when they were on their way down but that was when the dingo showed up.
Dingos are basically wild dogs which can get pretty viscous and it had started sort of circling them and then actually barked at them. It scared the life out of me and I couldn't look. Eventually they managed to get down past it without it doing anything but then it came up to our part of the hill so we had to grab all of our shoes or anything that was lying around so that they didn't pinch it.
The leaders actually went and sat down next to it and let it smell there arm and everything. They obviously knew how to handle them, or were just an absolute idiot. I was still petrified because this was all really close to us and the Dingo carried on following us as we started walking down the hill. I realised at one point I was walking towards it and that's when I turned around and walked back up the hill away from it.
Thankfully it eventually lay down and I got a fair way past it. Until another one came and I began power walking away again. It was quite a good job they rushed me down a bit because we only had 2 cars to fit 33ish people in. I got into the first car and by getting people to sit on top of people and I was sat just above where the hand brake was we got 17 people into our car. When we got back to camp we must have looked like clowns getting out of a really small car. The next one showed up later and actually had 20 off people in (there must have been more than 33 of us!). They were all sat on the roof and everything!
We managed to squeeze into a place to have dinner which was stir fry tonight. Everyone started drinking again then and started playing card games. I knew that it wasn't going to be as long as the night before purely because it was just so cold! I had a pair of leggings, tights, socks, trousers, a top and 2 jumpers on and I was absolutely freezing! I ended up turning in at around 10.30 just so that I could get in my sleeping bag. That did seem a lot later than it normally does though because we start the night at like 5 when the sun goes down.

Gran Shame no sharks, whales, or anything else much, showed up. Bad luck that a dingo did... or was it? Not many tourists see a dingo in the wild after all. I'd have loved to see those packed cars!
