Date: 27th July 2011
Place: Rainbow Beach and Agnes Water/1770
Weather: Sunny but still not warm enough
Got up early and had to sneak around the room to get ready. I wasn't sure if the bus was at 7 or 7.30 so I just prepared myself and I wanted to get pancakes anyway so I needed to be there for 7. Well I got my pancakes and the bus was at 7.30 so I had a very leisurely morning.
The driver was called Yute this time which he told us is a type of car; the truck sort with a big empty bit at the back which I would call a pick up truck. Along the journey we stopped off at the place where the woman who created Mary Poppins was born and had a picture taken with a statue outside the building.
We then stopped at a town where in 2000 a hostel had been burned down and 15 backpackers from all over the world died. It happened because a guy had been evicted for not paying rent for ages so he threatened them and then carried it through. Fire regulations weren't very good back then so the smoke detectors didn't go off because people had taken the batteries out to stop them beeping and there was probably storage things in front of the emergency exits. There were also bars over the windows to stop people braking in which basically meant they were trapped.
They rebuilt the hostel building but made it into a memorial and we went inside. There is a painting of them all sat on a field on the wall and they have little tiles on the walls with pictures of them growing up. Even though their deaths were horrible it has meant that fire regulations in Australia are now world class to make sure it doesn't happen again.
When we finally got to Agnes Water we were just in time for Scooteroo!! I went with a german girl called Laura and we were picked up by an apparently English guy but I didn't believe him. Before we knew he was English we had said he had such a strong Aussie accent.
Scooteroo was just good fun. They gave us leather jackets and a helmet with flames all over them and everyone had fake tattoos. We then had to do a practise few laps to make sure they were happy with how we rode the bike. The guy wasn't happy with me because I kept going to use the handbrake rather than the footbrake because it had become a habit from Vietnam. I had to go round and round the track until I got out of the habit and eventually I broke it.
We went on a tour of Agnes Water and 1770 where we saw a few Kangaroos and then stopped to have some dinner and watch the sun set. I had been behind two germans who were really annoying me because they kept slowing right down so they could get a fast run, they would take pictures whilst on the bikes when we had been told not too and they kept riding right next to each other. All I could think was if they go down Im going down. Thankfully they didn't and I got back in one piece. The ride back was freezing and I couldn't stop my teeth from chattering.
There was a tribal party on that night which looked really good because everyone had body paints and leaves on but I just couldn't face it since I was feeling pretty rough with a bad headache all day and a cold. Laura was having issues with her boyfriend not leaving her alone and not wanting her to have a good time whilst she was out here she I let her vent for a while and then when she went to the computers I crashed out.

Gran Well, fancy that... Mary Poppins coming from Oz! I remember news reports of the hostel tragedy so well. Pleased to know some good came out of it. A very sad place to visit though.
