Day 194- Our mini bus was to pick us up at 7.30am, or so we where told. We went to the small street stalls round the corner and got some chicken and rice for breakfast. By 8:45 we had enough of Thai time and asked the lady at the hotel reception to ring the company for us. After much confusion it was announced that the bus was now coming at 10am. It came late as standard but did manage to take us all the way back to Krabi without any further delay. We were quite worried by this point as the connecting bus was to leave at 11:30 and we knew it would be well after 12 before we arrived. Luckily we booked through a decent agent and he sorted out all the re-arrangements and contacted us to let us know of the changes. So shortly after we jumped off the mini bus we were loaded onto a coach which took us to Surat Thani where we were then all pushed through the ferry terminal and boarded the ferry to Koh Pha Ngan. It was a long and sickly two hour journey and when we were back on dry land we had to haggle with the tuk-tuk drivers viciously as were knew they were charging twice the price but wouldn't budge. One guy said he would take us but he said he wanted the money up front and after we told him 'NO' he decided his car wasn't working! So we walked along the road for a few minutes passing the night market we picked up some spring rolls and then got the right taxi price no problem. The hostel wasn't much easier as the lady for some reason sold our room but said she would give us a twin room and managed to get a discount so not all was lost. Feeling very hungry and tired we found a small cafe where Eve ate Pad Phet and I enjoyed Rad Naa which were both delicious.
Day 195- After the confusion from last night she said she would give us a better room and at the same price so she was placed into our good books and we set out for breakfast before starting on a nice long walk. We sourced out some bars for that night and browsed a few shops but all in all the area we were based in didn't have much going for it. We pulled off the street and onto the beach where we strolled along with our toes in the sea. It was unbelievable how shallow the water was, you could easily walk half a mile out and the water still wouldn't be passing your waist. This meant there were little islands of sand stretching out into the sea so we waded out to one and set up our towels and read our books in the sun for a while. There was a nice cool breeze so it wasn't too hot and the place was deserted, paradise once more! Feeling peckish we sauntered back to the hostel and found a brand new cafe that had only just opened that morning so we ordered some lunch. We got ourselves all spruced up and headed out for a few drinks. Most the bars we found during the day were either empty or full of 'Go-Go girls' so we walked past until we found one that at least looked nice and stupidly ordered home-made rum, in other words it was diluted with banana juice. We moved on to a small family place also served food so we shared a beer and ate some Thai rice then walked along the road to find the turn off for 'Jungle Experience' which was a big party in a jungle clearing not far from the town. We bought a drink for the road and set off in search of it. When we arrived we were very disappointed, one it was dead but more importantly we were told it was free before 11pm yet they wanted to charge us 300 Baht each which was not only expensive but also would have left us with no money left for a taxi back or drinks inside. So instead we saved a few quid and got a taxi back happy with the night anyway.
Day 196- There was more to see around the island so we hired a moped again and went in search of some life. We drove Southwards to Haad Rin which is the party mecca and where the monthly Full Moon Party is held, it was a bit of a dumb and full of hungover tourists. We still found a nice cafe though and enjoyed some lunch and also found an exchange bureau so bought the rest of our US Dollars for Burma. Happy we had seen what the town had to offer we were on our way passing back through Baan Thai and North to Ao Chaloklum which is a fishing village and the very tip of the island. After walking past some of the seafood restaurants we couldn't resist so popped into one and picked a seat that overlooked the little port and ordered a seafood and potato curry, some of the best squid and prawns we have ever had! Some of the boutique hotels were fabulous and the little towns were great, we stopped at a few but there really wasn't anything to do but lie on the beach. The sun wasn't far from setting and we just drove past a great little bamboo bar built on stilts over the sea at Ao Hin Kong beach, so with little hesitation we swung round and bought an ice cold drink as we snapped away at one for the most amazing sunsets yet. The colours were formidable Back in Thongsala which was the main pier town we changed our final Baht to Dollar and picked up yet more amazing food from the night market. Eve couldn't resist sushi but I went more authentic with a pork Penang Curry with bamboo shoots, egg and tomato and rice and we took it back to the hostel and devoured it.
Day 197- We just had breakfast at the new cafe across the road as we didn't particularly want to work up a sweat as we had 24 hours of solid travelling ahead of us. We were given menus this time as yesterday was actually the first day it opened, we were more than likely her first ever customers! It turned out to serve really fancy Italian food so Eve got Bruschetta whereas I just went for standard fried rice with pork. After checking out we hailed down a tuk-tuk and drove to Thongsala pier. After enduring another rough 2 hours on the ferry we were put onto a bus to Surat Thani which took around an hour and there we waited for 2 and a half hours for the final bus. It was a night bus with seats that barely reclined so it was very sleepless and after 11 hours we arrived into Bangkok.
